Essential Tips for Updating Your Ensuite Bathroom

Is your ensuite bathroom starting to show its age? Trends in bathroom design have changed significantly over the past few decades, and what was once considered a “must have” may now be a “must go”. Case in point: this stunning transformation that took my client’s ensuite from dated to dreamy.

A major renovation like this can be daunting, and my clients were experiencing decision paralysis. Feeling stuck, they turned to me for help coming up with a plan for the serene master retreat they’d been dreaming of.

When planning a bathroom renovation, there are many important considerations. Two big things that usually need to be addressed when updating an older bathroom are the layout and the lighting.

In this project, a few minor adjustments to the layout made much better use of the available space. We eliminated the bidet, removed the wall between the vanity and toilet, and incorporated more storage in the cabinetry.

The focal point in the new bathroom is a beautiful freestanding soaker tub to take in the views of the forest outside.

Good lighting is essential in every room, but especially in the bathroom. We increased the overall lighting with pot lights in the ceiling and added decorative sconces flanking the mirror for an additional design element.

With its busy floral wallpaper and dark forest green tub, the bathroom wasn’t the calm, relaxing space my clients wanted. Taking inspiration from the view outside, I selected a warm wood-look tile for the floors that is a perfect complement to the classic white cabinetry and fixtures. Bonus: the flooring is heated for extra comfort on chilly mornings!

For privacy, I installed simple roller shades in a faux grasscloth fabric that lend additional texture and warmth to the space. Soft blue accents in artwork and accessories help bring the neutral colour scheme to life.

The shower features full panes of glass on two sides, giving the space an open and airy feel and allowing for unobstructed sightlines to the woods outside.

A complete bathroom renovation is a complex process with many different steps. By offering a full service approach, I can help my clients with everything from choosing fixtures, colours and finishes to scheduling deliveries and navigating any unforeseen challenges. Throughout the design and construction process, my clients loved being able to ask me questions anytime.

Updating a drab, dated, or dysfunctional master bathroom can be overwhelming. Partnering with a full service design team can help you overcome your decision paralysis and finally turn your dream bathroom into a reality!

Here’s what my client had to say about her experience:

Natalie created a stunning design for our beautiful new en-suite bathroom. She thought of every detail and incorporated our suggestions into the final plan. She is very easy to work with and was responsive to all our questions from start to finish. I highly recommend Natalie for any design project and look forward to working with her again.
