Tired of losing mittens and tripping on shoes?

If you’re lucky enough to have a mudroom in your home, you’re probably also familiar with the chaos that happens all too often in this area! Without a good system for organization, clutter can easily take over. If you’re looking for pro tips to organize your mudroom and simplify your life, read on!

Even decorators are not immune to this phenomenon in their own homes. Earlier this year I tackled my family’s mudroom. We use this space daily, but it wasn’t very functional – or pretty.

This messy before picture says it all. Our mudroom was dark and dreary, with stuff piled everywhere and no personality!

To transform this space and organize the chaos, we started by removing all the things that didn’t belong there. Camping lantern, I’m looking at you! Over time, the mudroom can become a drop zone for all kinds of random things, and ours was no exception.

Next, I took an inventory of the items that needed to stay and came up with a simple organization system that would keep everything in order. It’s important to consider your family’s unique needs and lifestyle to make sure you incorporate the right size and style of storage. Some options to consider include:

  • Hooks
  • Baskets
  • Shelves
  • Drawers
  • Free-standing storage i.e. a wardrobe or console table
  • Closet organizers
  • Custom-built solutions

I love my antique armoire and knew its drawers would be the perfect place to store seasonal clothing.

Handy hooks on the wall keep frequently used jackets, scarves, and bags tidy, while a lovely dark-stained wood bench is an ideal perch when putting on shoes and boots.

Of course, function is important, but this space needed a little something to brighten it up, too. I fell in love with the bold checked wallpaper and knew it would make a stunning accent wall and complement the room’s colour palette perfectly. But the best part? It’s super washable which is great for winter grime and dirt splatter.

Once a messy mish-mash, our marvelous mudroom is now one of my favourite areas in our home. I tamed the chaos with an organizational system that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, and it’s made our everyday lives so much easier. No more lost mittens!
